		<description>&#38;nbsp;Mbali Dhlamini (b. Johannesburg, South Africa, 1990; MA University of the Witwatersrand, 2015) is a multidisciplinary artist and visual researcher.&#38;nbsp;

Dhlamini performs visual, tactile and discursive investigations into current indigenous cultural practices. With a view towards decolonized practices in contemporary culture, her work is in constant conversation with her past and present visual landscapes. Working to maintain a state of unlearning and relearning, Dhlamini’s process recognises language as a medium of understanding and as a repository of knowledge.

Dhlamini is a dynamic and energetic practitioner who exists across roles within the arts sector - from producing her own work to facilitating self-sustaining artist collectives, exhibitions and other art-centered gatherings.

Igama
lakho elihle.
Site
specific installation informed by archival images from the World Council of
Churches.

Umlindelo is a Zulu
word for a practice that is conducted a night before a burial or a
religious/ancestral ceremony. Ukulindela is to await, to take a pause and
remain present in a moment by acknowledging the reason for the engagement.
During Umlindelo a series of events are performed that are in line with the
intention of the ceremony.

During her
residency at Embassy of Foreign Artists in Geneva, Mbali will expanded on her
masters research, which focused on the etymology of colour in South African
Indigenous languages and how African Independent Churches use colour to
appropriate Christianity. She spent time studying the archives from the
Swiss missionaries that were sent to South Africa to establish churches. The
archive is situated at The Ecumenical Centre in Geneva, Switzerland and serves
as the base for Church organisations such as the world council of churches.
Mbali&#38;nbsp; submerged herself in the archive and creates a dialogue by staging&#38;nbsp; umilindelo and inviting the public to Lindela
(observe) with her.
Mbali explains her
project: “I am drawn to this research by the titles used to describe and label
most of the images. The images are generally titled ‘African women/African men‘
with often only the Swiss missionaries named. The project intends to Lindela
(dwell) on the titles and use artistic interpretations to rethink and rename
the images. Through this process I ask; how do you bring back the image to the
owner? How do you retract images recorded and shared publicly without the
subject’s consent? What is the significance of these images that exist in
colonial archives and museums, outside their country of origin? Can the images
be erased? Or rather, how do you reimagine the image and its place in history?
These questions will unfold through the series of events performed during
Umlindelo.

Non Promised Land Is an investigation on how Apostolic and Zionist movements use colour to explore faith and spirituality in an attempt to negotiate their presence and space. An introspection on how colour use within the movements has shifted from the white missionary garments to a rainbow of colours that crowd our communities of Sunday. In search for a sense of identity and a place to belong, these bright coloured church garments filled our surroundings like ghostly images; they move and swirl through space.Constitution Hill, Johannesburg. 2015.

&#38;nbsp;“...Go Bipa Mpa Ka Mabele makes reference to a saying in Setswana, which loosely translates to "conceal" or "shroud in secrecy" and is a nod to Dhlamini's keen interest and explorative sensibility to revealing knowledge about very particular cultural practices and indigenous knowledge that may otherwise not be readily visible, in both the material and immaterial forms.

This process of revealing things that would otherwise remain concealed, but also highlighting through obscuring, is on display through the blurred or receded faces in the Look Into drawings and photographs and it is mirrored in the see-through dresses in both the photographs and the film that are part of Go Bipa Mpa Ka Mabele. In other words, concealing ("go bipa") is sometimes done intentionally to protect or fend off unwanted prying eyes. Although the dresses in the film and corresponding photographs are made with a see-through material, the way the artist moves her body and is captured in the still images blurs details of her body, simultaneously revealing and yet concealing parts of what is seen...”
